JAMSHEDPUR – The city is enduring an extreme heat wave, causing once-bustling streets to turn eerily quiet as people stay indoors to escape the oppressive heat.

Daily life has been significantly disrupted by the scorching temperatures.

Roads and markets, typically bustling with activity, now appear deserted.

Those who must venture out do so briefly, seeking shelter from the intense sun as quickly as possible.

The extreme heat has not only disrupted routines but has also led to increased caution among residents.

The relentless heat has resulted in a surge of heat stroke cases.

Hospitals and nursing homes report a rise in patients suffering from heat-related conditions.

An official from MGM Medical College and Hospital noted an increase in daily admissions due to heat stroke, describing the situation as unprecedented and emphasizing the hospital’s efforts to manage the patient influx.

Rise in Other Health Issues

Besides heat stroke, there is also an uptick in ailments such as cough, cold, seasonal flu, and jaundice.

This rise in health issues is straining the city’s healthcare resources, prompting doctors to advise residents to take preventive measures and stay hydrated.

Meteorological Forecast and Warnings

The meteorological department has extended its heat wave warning, forecasting continued high temperatures.

A weather analyst explained that westerly winds are driving the current heat wave and are expected to persist until mid-June.

The analyst warned that temperatures could climb even higher, potentially exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.

He also cautioned that parts of Kolhan are likely to experience severe heat wave conditions, urging residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions.

Impact on Local Businesses

Despite the oppressive heat, some businesses are thriving.

Vendors selling coconut water and juices report increased sales as people seek ways to cool down.

A vendor mentioned that the demand for refreshing drinks has surged, with more people stopping by to hydrate.

Changes in Daily Routines

However, the heat wave has forced many to change their daily habits.

A resident from Kadma expressed her concern about the extreme weather, saying it feels as if they are already in the middle of summer, and she plans to keep her children indoors to protect them from the heat.

Dr. Ramesh Singh, a local physician, advised, “It’s crucial to stay hydrated and avoid the sun during peak hours. We need to be extra cautious with children and the elderly.”

Health Precautions

Health officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, wearing light clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

They also urge residents to look out for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
