Talk on ‘Women in Agriculture’ at the GAVL summit

Desk: First summit on the topic of ‘Women in Agriculture’ was conducted by Godrej Agrovet Limited (GAVL).

The summit’s objectives are to bring together various viewpoints on agriculture, have thought-provoking discussions to recognize the significant role that women play in India’s agricultural industry, and discuss the problems that come with it.

A common misperception is that agriculture is a field dominated by men. But when we examine the nation’s statistics, a different image becomes apparent. 8.61 crore women work in agriculture in India. This represents 60% of all women employed in the nation. Eighty-four percent of the women in these rural regions rely on agriculture as their primary source of income. However, the number of women in all jobs continues to exceed the number of males, especially in agricultural firms.

The panel discussion on improving women’s employability in the agri-food industry covered a wide range of topics related to the skill gap that exists for women in the industry.

The topic of how industry and academics working together might assist solve this issue was also discussed. Other panel discussions focused on exchanging ideas and advancing women into leadership positions, emphasizing the need of empowering women in the field.

Balram Singh Yadav, Managing Director of GAVL, said that while women farmers make significant contributions to the agricultural industry and are very prevalent, they are not equipped with the requisite resources.

Therefore, we must establish a patriarchy that supports women in agribusinesses as well as the fields in a nation where we must feed a population of over a billion people. Giving them the tools, resources, and assistance they need will undoubtedly aid in raising the nation’s total agricultural output.
