£10 Million Investment for Advanced Materials Innovation by Tata Steel and Royce Institute

Tata Steel and The Henry Royce Institute have embarked on a significant collaboration with the signing of an MoU to establish a Centre for Innovation in Advanced Materials in Manchester, UK.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel has joined hands with The Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials to set up a Centre for Innovation in Advanced Materials, located at the Institute’s headquarters at the University of Manchester.

The collaboration involves a £10 million investment from Tata Steel over four years, marking a significant step in R&D initiatives.

T. V. Narendran, CEO & MD of Tata Steel, highlighted the strategic importance of the Centre for Innovation in the UK, focusing on global technology and innovation ecosystems.

Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, Vice President of Technology and R&D at Tata Steel, emphasized the Centre’s alignment with Tata Steel’s technology leadership and future-ready business strategies.

The Centre will integrate research on advanced materials including composites, graphene, and medical materials, with a focus on 2D materials and recycling technologies.

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester, underscored the Centre’s potential in leveraging the university’s expertise in advanced materials.

Professor David Knowles, Royce CEO, noted the collaboration’s significance for advanced materials and manufacturing in the North West and across the UK.

This Centre aims to bolster the UK’s innovation ecosystem, involving multiple universities, catapult centres, and the National Health Service.

The initiative will benefit from participation by leading academics and technologists through the Royce Institute’s partner network.

The Centre is part of Tata Steel’s plan to establish multiple global satellite R&D and Technology centres in strategic areas, contributing to regional economic growth and addressing challenges in health, sustainability, and net-zero goals.

This partnership capitalizes on Tata Steel’s expertise in technology translation and commercialization, alongside Royce’s strengths in science and innovation within advanced materials.
