Jharkhand’s ‘Lady Tarzan’ Jamuna Tudu Meets President, Discusses Forest Conservation

Jamuna Tudu met President Draupadi Murmu to discuss forest conservation issues and compensation increase for elephant attacks’ victims.

JAMSHEDPUR – On Saturday, Padmashree Jamuna Tudu, famously known as the ‘Lady Tarzan’ of Jharkhand, met President Draupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on a courtesy visit.

This meeting was in conjunction with an invitation extended to the President for World Environment Day celebrations scheduled for June 5, 2024, in Chakulia.

During the meeting, Jamuna Tudu raised the issue that the government does not provide honoraria to women engaged in forest conservation work.

She emphasized that providing an honorarium would incentivize these women to be more active in preserving forests.

There has been a recent escalation in incidents of elephant nuisance in Chakulia and Baharagora, leading to several fatalities due to elephant attacks.

Jamuna Tudu proposed a revision in the compensation given to the dependents of the deceased in such cases.

Currently, the government extends compensation of Rs. 4 lakh to the deceased’s dependents.

She strongly advocated for increasing this amount to Rs. 10 lakh.

Along with this, she proposed a scheme for compensation to be disbursed within 7 days of the incident and urgent measures to prevent further destruction of crops and houses.

Regarding the proposed airport at Dhalbhumgarh, Jamuna Tudu informed the President that the elephant corridor in the area was a hindrance to the project.

Instead, she suggested the development of an airport at Chakulia where 600 acres of land is available.

She submitted a memorandum detailing these issues to the President.

Jamuna Tudu shared that President Draupadi Murmu assured her of due consideration and appropriate action on these matters.
