Congressmen in Jamshedpur stage a torch procession against the Gujarat high court’s decision upholding Rahul Gandhi’s conviction and sentence.
JAMSHEDPUR – In response to the Gujarat High Court’s dismissal of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea to stay his conviction and two-year prison sentence in a defamation case, Congressmen in Jamshedpur staged a torch procession.
The High Court’s decision has led to Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha, a situation that persists.
Justice Hemant Prachchhak upheld the Gujarat sessions court’s decision not to suspend a magisterial court order convicting the Congress leader under the Indian Penal Code’s criminal defamation provision.
The judge highlighted that there are at least eight other criminal cases pending against Gandhi.

The Gujarat High Court also dismissed Gandhi’s review petition concerning a defamation case linked to the Modi surname, stating that the trial court’s verdict was correct and required no intervention.
Disagreeing with this ruling, East Singhbhum’s Congress members, led by District Secretary Rais Rizvi Chabban, protested against the central Modi government in Bishtupur.
Speaking to the media, City President Dharmendra Sonkar criticized the court’s decision, accusing the central and Gujarat BJP governments of misleading the public and the court.
Congress District Secretary Rais Rizvi Chabban warned that neither their leaders nor party members would be intimidated by the government’s tactics, expressing their intent to overthrow the party from the government in the upcoming state and 2024 general elections.
