Footballer Amir sentenced to death in Iran for supporting protests

Iran’s professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani has been executed for supporting the ongoing movement to demand the freedom of women’s clothing.

He once played in Iran’s under-16 team. The 26-year-old footballer last played for the country’s club Tractor SC. He was arrested in September this year for killing three security guards.

Footballer’s union FIFPRO is surprised by such news. In a statement, the organization called for Azadani’s punishment to be revoked immediately.

A tweet from the organization said, “We stand in solidarity with Amir and call for immediate withdrawal of his punishment.”

Meanwhile, 400 people have been jailed for up to 10 years in Iran. The accused were arrested for participating in anti-government protests. This information was revealed in a report on Wednesday citing an Iranian official.

A court in the Iranian capital, Tehran, has sentenced 400 people arrested in anti-government protests to up to 10 years in prison, a judiciary official said. Iran’s Mizan news agency said the court sentenced 160 rioters to between five and 10 years, 80 to two to five years and 160 to two years or less.

Apart from this, 70 people have been fined, Ali Alkasimehr said. However, no details have been provided about them.

The 400 were sentenced to prison a day after the Iranian authorities hanged the second accused, who was originally found guilty of inciting unrest in the country.

Iran’s judiciary announced Monday morning that 23-year-old Majidreza Rahnavard was publicly executed in the northeastern city of Mashhad.
