JAMSHEDPUR – A young man was left in a critical condition late at night after a group of unidentified assailants launched a murderous attack on him near the Muslim Basti cemetery in the Burma Mines police station area.
The attackers reportedly used sharp-edged weapons and stones to assault the victim before fleeing the scene. Investigators are still working to establish a motive for the assault.
The injured man has been identified as Raja Karmakar, a resident of Carriage Colony. Family members rushed him to the Sadar Hospital as soon as they learned of the incident.
Doctors at the Sadar Hospital administered first aid before referring him to MGM Hospital for advanced treatment, citing the severity of his injuries. He remains under observation there.
Raja Karmakar’s wife told reporters that the couple had gone to her mother’s house to collect installment money. Her husband was reportedly standing outside the house when the attackers struck without warning.
She said the family shares no old dispute with anyone and could not explain why the attack occurred. Meanwhile, the assault left the neighbourhood on edge for several hours afterward.
Local residents have also expressed concern over the incident. Family members have appealed to the police for a fair investigation and swift arrests of those responsible.
Police have opened an investigation and are questioning residents in the area in an effort to identify the attackers. Officers said the reasons behind the assault are being examined and that steps are being taken toward making arrests.
However, a formal case is yet to be registered as investigators continue gathering statements. Similar cases of street violence have periodically surfaced in Jamshedpur in recent months, including a knife-related dispute in Govindpur and a body found in Adityapur with a country-made pistol nearby.
Police in the city have also recently cracked down on other crimes, including a theft gang bust and a case involving stolen jewelry in Bagbera. Doctors say the victim’s condition remains serious, and treatment is ongoing at MGM Hospital.
