Elderly Man Burned Alive Over Witchcraft Suspicions in Gumla

Fresh Witch-hunting Case Highlights Persistent Superstition-driven Violence in Rural Jharkhand

Key Points:

  • Neighbors throw elderly man into burning pyre over black magic accusations
  • Witch-hunting incidents continue to plague tribal areas despite laws
  • Government plans awareness drive against superstition-related crimes

RANCHI – A shocking case of witch-hunting emerged from Gumla district where locals burned an elderly man alive over suspicions of practicing black magic.

Several such incidents have rocked Jharkhand’s tribal belt recently. Local authorities have reported over 1,200 witch-hunting deaths in the state since 2000.

Legal Actions Strengthened

The state government has strengthened the Prevention of Witch (DAAIN) Practices Act. First-time offenders now face up to 3 years in prison.

“We are implementing a zero-tolerance policy against witch-hunting,” a senior police official said.

Education Drive Launched

The administration has partnered with NGOs for awareness programs. Over 200 villages have been covered under anti-superstition campaigns this year.

Meanwhile, local community leaders are being trained to counter such beliefs. School curriculums now include sections on scientific thinking.
