Inclusive Hiring Initiative Marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Key Points:

  • Tata Steel hires differently-abled CCTV operators under "Empowering the Capable."

  • Comprehensive training enables new recruits to excel in their roles.

  • Diversity goal set at 20% workforce representation by 2025.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division is championing workplace inclusivity by employing differently-abled individuals, showcasing its commitment on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Tata Steel’s "Empowering the Capable" initiative has been transformative, with four differently-abled employees joining the West Bokaro Division as CCTV operators on August 13, 2024. Their journey began with a rigorous recruitment process facilitated by Atypical Advantage, with HR and technical support from Tata Steel’s associated services.

The new recruits—Prem Sharma, Mohammad Hashim Hasan, Angad Kumar Singh, and Abhilash Sharma—underwent extensive training, which included site visits, technical familiarization, and operational practices. By September 3, 2024, they began their responsibilities in the Security Department, actively contributing to maintaining operational security.

Training and Workplace Adaptations

To support this initiative, the Security Department introduced accessible infrastructure, such as ramps, adapted restrooms, and ergonomic workspaces. Moreover, the company provided housing facilities to ease the transition for these employees.

Mr. Anurag Dixit, General Manager of the West Bokaro Division, emphasized the significance of the program, stating, “This initiative symbolizes our dedication to inclusivity and diversity. Our new team members have already demonstrated remarkable contributions.”

One of the highlights of the new recruits’ impact was their instrumental role in resolving a theft case, proving their efficacy in critical scenarios.

Personal Triumphs

For the new hires, joining Tata Steel marked a significant milestone. Mohammad Hashim Hasan expressed his pride in working for such a prestigious organization, while Prem Sharma shared his joy in fulfilling a childhood dream. Angad Kumar Singh highlighted the long-standing legacy of Tata Steel in his family, and Abhilash Sharma appreciated the stability and respect that permanent employment has brought to his life.

Future Goals and Broader Impact

With diversity already encompassing 6% of the workforce, including women and transgender employees, Tata Steel aims to raise this figure to 20% by 2025. The company also plans to extend similar hiring opportunities across various departments.

This initiative aligns with Tata Steel’s broader strategy of embedding inclusivity into its corporate culture, fostering an environment where every employee can thrive.
