Gas Tanker Leak Near Sonari Averts Major Mishap in Jamshedpur

Alert Driver, Quick Police Response Prevent Possible Blast

Key Points:

  • Driver halts vehicle, alerts company and police in time
  • Technical team seals leak, tanker later sent back safely

JAMSHEDPUR – Panic gripped the area near Sonari Dumuhani on Tuesday after an LPG tanker developed a sudden gas leak while passing through the locality.

The tanker’s driver spotted the leak in time and pulled the vehicle to the side of the road. He immediately alerted the LPG company’s management and the police about the malfunction.

Officers from the Sonari police station rushed to the spot soon after receiving the alert. As a precaution, they halted vehicular movement on both sides of the stretch to prevent any untoward incident.

Within a short while, officials from the LPG company along with a technical team arrived at the site. The team worked to bring the leak under control and stabilise the situation.

An officer at the Sonari police station said a spark from any passing vehicle could have ignited the leaking gas, potentially triggering a major disaster. However, the driver’s alertness, combined with prompt police intervention, helped avert what could have been a serious accident.

“As soon as we received the information, our team reached the spot and halted traffic from both directions as a safety measure,” the officer said.

Company personnel later shut off the leak completely. Once the situation was confirmed to be under control, the tanker was allowed to proceed to the company’s premises. Officials noted that a similar hazard had recently surfaced elsewhere in the city, after a fire broke out during an LPG connection installation in Kadma, injuring two workers.

Meanwhile, the incident renewed concerns over gas-tanker movement through congested stretches of the city, an area that had also witnessed a fatal mishap at a CNG pump in Sakchi earlier this year.

Besides the swift containment effort, the response echoed a separate case in which a major accident was averted after a bus with brake failure went out of control in the city. On the other hand, road safety has remained a persistent worry, with a horrific road accident reported on the Tata-Kandra road in Adityapur just a day earlier.

The Sonari locality has otherwise seen calmer engagements in recent days, including a community religious gathering held there last month. Moreover, police in the wider district have stepped up outreach efforts, with a community outreach drive recently launched in remote villages of East Singhbhum.

In addition, officials reiterated that vigilance from both drivers and residents remains critical in Jamshedpur, where several gas and vehicular hazards have been reported in populated areas this year.
