RAJMAHAL – A labourer died in a road accident on Monday evening, prompting his family to block a road for nearly two hours while demanding compensation from the administration.
The deceased was identified as Mahavir Oraon. According to locals, he was returning home after completing his day’s labour work when he met with the accident. He suffered severe injuries in the crash.
Villagers in the area rushed him to the subdivisional hospital in Rajmahal immediately after the accident. Doctors examined him there and declared him dead.
As news of the accident spread, family members and other villagers gathered at the scene. With the help of local residents, the family placed the body on the road and blocked traffic, demanding compensation.
The blockade continued for nearly one to two hours, disrupting movement of vehicles along the route.
On receiving information about the road jam, Rajmahal police station in-charge Hasnain Ansari reached the spot with a police contingent. He persuaded the protesters and got the blockade cleared.
The officer assured the family of all possible support from the administration. Following this, villagers ended the road blockade and traffic movement returned to normal.
Family members remained inconsolable following the incident. Police have launched an investigation into the accident.
Such road blockades demanding compensation after fatal accidents have been reported repeatedly across the state in recent weeks. Earlier this month, two youths killed in a bike-minibus collision in Ramgarh led to a similar blockade of NH-33 as families sought compensation. In Chandil, an ethanol tanker collision on the same highway had also left three people injured just days earlier.
Meanwhile, family protests over compensation and job demands have also surfaced elsewhere in the state. In Kandra, relatives staged an indefinite protest outside Amalgam Steel over a compassionate appointment, while workers at the Guwa mine had similarly halted operations after an officer’s death.
Besides Rajmahal, road accidents have continued to claim lives across Jharkhand this month. A young man from Chakulia had earlier died in a road accident in Tamil Nadu, with his mother appealing to the local MLA for help in bringing his body home.
