Station Chief Warns Riders, Says “Helmet Is Not Style, It’s Life”

GALUDIH – Police in Galudih launched an anti-crime vehicle checking drive on Sunday to curb the rising number of road accidents in the area. During the operation, between 50 and 60 motorcyclists riding without helmets were caught.
The checking drive was conducted on NH-18 under the leadership of Galudih police station in-charge Anku Kumar. However, officers specifically focused on two-wheelers, checking riders travelling without helmets on the highway stretch.
Bikes belonging to riders who did not have a helmet, licence or vehicle documents were seized and brought to the police station. The sudden action created a stir among riders who had been travelling without helmets.
Meanwhile, the station in-charge personally stopped riders during the drive to raise awareness about road safety. “We are not here to issue challans, but to save your lives,” he told them. He added that while a helmet costs around Rs 500, a person’s life is priceless.
He further said that most deaths in road accidents occur due to head injuries. According to him, wearing a helmet can save up to 70 percent of lives in such crashes.
In addition, the police made a special appeal to young riders, urging them to avoid over-speeding, triple riding and driving under the influence of alcohol. Officers said these were among the leading causes of fatal accidents on the highway.
The station in-charge warned that such anti-crime checking drives would continue on a regular basis going forward. He added that strict action would be taken against those found violating traffic rules in future checks.
Baharagora and surrounding stretches of NH-18 have witnessed a series of road accidents in the past, prompting periodic enforcement drives by local police to improve helmet compliance among two-wheeler riders. Similar road-safety initiatives, including campaigns against rash driving and awareness drives in Seraikela, have been carried out across East Singhbhum in recent years, alongside broader efforts on traffic awareness for schoolchildren.
