JAMTARA – A woman died under suspicious circumstances following childbirth at a private hospital in Jamtara district, prompting her family to accuse the facility of serious medical negligence.
Angry relatives and local residents created an uproar inside the hospital premises after the incident. They demanded strict action against those they held responsible for her death.
According to family members, the woman had been admitted to the hospital for delivery. Her condition allegedly began deteriorating soon after childbirth, but the hospital administration failed to provide timely and adequate treatment, they claimed.
The family further alleged that doctors decided to refer her to another hospital only after her condition turned critical. However, by then considerable time had already been lost. She died during subsequent treatment.
News of her death spread quickly, and relatives along with villagers grew furious. They accused the hospital management of medical negligence and staged a strong protest outside the facility.
Hundreds of people later took to the streets and blocked the main road in the area. Demonstrators demanded adequate compensation for the deceased woman’s family, stringent action against the hospital management, and a fair investigation into the case.
Similar allegations of medical negligence have surfaced elsewhere in the region recently. In Adityapur, family members had alleged negligence after a miscarriage at a private hospital, leading to a similar uproar.
Meanwhile, administration and police officials rushed to the spot as soon as they received information about the road blockade. Officers attempted to pacify the family members and assured them that the matter would be investigated.
Such road blockades in protest of grievances have become increasingly common across Jharkhand. Workers had earlier halted operations at Guwa mine following the death of an officer, while families in Kandra staged an indefinite sit-in demanding a job on compassionate grounds. In Ranchi, aspirants had similarly rallied against exam cancellations, while a march by scholars in Patna was stopped by police en route to Lok Bhawan.
After considerable effort, officials managed to clear the road blockade. Police have since begun investigating the case.
The administration said further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The deceased woman’s family, however, remained firm in their demand for strict action against those responsible and for justice in the case.
