JAMSHEDPUR – A 22-year-old man has been seriously injured in a knife attack near Workers’ College in Mango, with residents alleging the assailants were intoxicated.
The incident occurred in the Punjabi Line locality on Monday. It caused alarm across the neighbourhood.
Rahul Tantubai was named as the injured man. He lives in the same locality.
Two youths are said to have attacked him with a knife. The assault took place in front of the college building.
Moreover, the injured man has named his alleged attackers. He identified them as Roshan and Ravi Gorai, aged 21.
Both are residents of Punjabi Line. Eyewitnesses said Roshan was carrying the weapon.
He struck Tantubai with it, according to those accounts. Confusion spread at the site immediately afterwards.
Meanwhile, a friend of the injured man stepped in. Aman Singh rushed him to hospital for treatment.
Tantubai remains under medical care there. His condition has not been described further.
Local residents have made a separate allegation about the accused. They said the youths were intoxicated on dendrite at the time.
Besides, they said the crime was carried out in that state. Concern has grown in the area over substance abuse among the young.
Residents have also pointed to a pattern of knife assaults. They have demanded strict police action in response.
Police began an investigation after being informed of the attack. Officers are questioning people living nearby.
In addition, the full sequence of events is being pieced together. Steps have been initiated to arrest the accused.
Legal action will follow the completion of the inquiry, police said.
The locality has reported several violent incidents this year. A youth was shot and stabbed in Mango earlier this month.
However, policing efforts have also been stepped up. Officers sought public suggestions during a crime control exercise in the area.
Narcotics enforcement has run alongside those measures. A peddler was held in the locality under Operation Prahar in June.
On the other hand, the wider district has recorded similar assaults. A youth was attacked with a chopper in Telco in July.
Another such case was reported from Sidhgora days later. Police arrested three men in the Bagbera assault case the same month.
The city had earlier seen a stabbing death at a club. The Himanshu Singh case was converted to murder in June.
Police in Jamshedpur have faced questions over the rise in such incidents.
