JAMSHEDPUR – A citywide bandh called by the NDA against the murder of Karni Sena leader Himanshu Singh brought markets across Jamshedpur to a standstill on Friday.
Police deployed heavy forces across the city from early morning. Magistrates were posted at sensitive intersections, markets and public spaces.
Senior officials toured several neighborhoods through the day. They reviewed security arrangements and kept patrol teams on alert.
The NDA called the shutdown after the murder of Karni Sena leader Himanshu Singh. Rising crime across the city also fueled the protest call.
Himanshu Singh was reportedly killed at a city bar earlier in the week. The incident triggered days of unrest in the region.
However, workers had earlier held a torchlight procession ahead of the bandh. Authorities had also imposed prohibitory orders in six police station areas.
Meanwhile, processions moved through Sakchi, Bistupur and Jugsalai on Friday morning. Workers also marched through Mango and Golmuri markets across Jamshedpur.
Besides marching, they appealed to shop owners to close peacefully. Most traders complied, leaving markets quieter than usual.
Large crowds gathered at Sakchi Golchakkar and Bistupur Bazar. Protesters raised slogans against the state government led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
They voiced concern over the city’s deteriorating law and order. “We want strict action against the accused and safety for residents,” said a local resident.
Demonstrators demanded quick arrest of all accused in the case. They also sought stronger measures to curb crime citywide.
In addition, the case had earlier seen action against a senior SSP removal. Police also reported two juvenile arrests linked to the case.
On the other hand, university exams postponed as a result of the shutdown. Opposition leaders separately said the killing pointed to a law and order failure.
Traffic remained partially affected in several areas during the morning. However, essential services continued to function normally.
The administration urged citizens to maintain peace and avoid rumors. It also asked residents to cooperate with law enforcement.
The bandh remained peaceful as of the report’s filing. Officials continued monitoring the situation across the city.
