Jamshedpur Bhuiyandih Basti Demolition Case Heads to NGT

MLA Saryu Roy meets SC lawyer to represent Kalyan and Indira Nagar residents

Jamshedpur slum dwellers seek legal recourse against demolitions, alleging flawed survey and guideline violations.

JAMSHEDPUR – MLA Saryu Roy has engaged Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Upadhyay to represent Kalyan and Indira Nagar slum residents in an upcoming National Green Tribunal hearing.

The case, scheduled for August 23, 2024, challenges the recent demolitions in these areas.

Roy met with Upadhyay in New Delhi to discuss the legal strategy for the affected residents.

"We’re committed to ensuring justice for these communities," stated Roy after the meeting.

Upadhyay agreed to take on the case, pending the submission of necessary Vakalatnama documents from the residents.

Roy has taken responsibility for collecting and delivering these legal authorizations during his next Delhi visit.

The MLA criticized the current survey of the affected areas, claiming it failed to adhere to NGT guidelines and overlooked crucial facts.

A group of twelve selected slum dwellers will present their case, demanding a new, comprehensive survey by the administration.

Residents plan to submit a memorandum to the Chief Secretary, insisting their concerns be included in the affidavit due by August 23.

If their issues remain unaddressed, the residents are prepared to file a separate affidavit through Upadhyay, urging the NGT to consider their proposal.
