Telemedicine Revolutionizes Healthcare in Jamshedpur’s Ghaghidih Jail

Supreme Court Directive Brings Remote Medical Care to Inmates

Innovative approach addresses doctor shortage while ensuring timely healthcare access for prisoners in Jharkhand correctional facilities.

JAMSHEDPUR – The Ghaghidih Central Jail has recently introduced telemedicine services, which is a major step forward in providing healthcare to prisoners.

The initiative, which was put into action in response to directives from the Supreme Court, is designed to address the ongoing issue of a lack of doctors in correctional facilities.

Two doctors from Sadar Hospital have been chosen to lead this innovative program, which allows for remote health assessments and prescriptions for inmates.

The telemedicine system enables convenient medical consultations without requiring in-person visits, enhancing healthcare accessibility within the jail.

A spokesperson, specifically assigned to the jail, communicates the health concerns of prisoners to doctors. The doctors then offer suitable medical guidance and prescriptions based on the information provided.

Within just two days of its launch, the service has already helped more than a dozen prisoners, clearly showing how quickly it is making a positive impact on inmate healthcare.

Dr. Rajiv Sharma has been appointed as the monitoring officer for the telemedicine program at Sadar Hospital. His role is to oversee the program’s operation and ensure its effectiveness.

There are plans in progress to expand this service to Ghatsila Jail, so that inmates can receive treatment by connecting with the sub-divisional hospital.

This new approach not only solves the problem of doctors being available but also makes the delivery of medical services in jails more efficient.

The successful implementation in Ghaghidih Jail is a great example that can be used as a model for potentially expanding to other correctional facilities across Jharkhand.
