Tata Steel Centre for Excellence marked International Archives Day by opening a gallery featuring plates of manufacturers of the initial equipment installed at its Jamshedpur plant, showcasing the company’s industrial heritage and journey through the ages.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel Centre for Excellence Celebrated the International Archives Day by Inaugurating a gallery showcasing manufacturers of the initial equipments of Jamshedpur Plant.

The gallery was inaugurated by Mr. Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President (Corporate Services) of Tata Steel, in the presence of former Vice Presidents, senior leadership, and Chiefs from Tata Steel and Tata Steel Utilities Infrastructure Services Limited (TSUISL).

The plates on display have been collected and curated by Dr. T Mukherjee, Former Deputy Managing Director, Steel, Tata Steel.

The equipment featured in the gallery was procured by Tata Steel during the initial setup of the plant, with the loco plates ranging from 1911, when the plant became operational, to 1963.

Showcasing Industrial Heritage

The gallery showcases plates from various manufacturers, including P & W MacLellan Ltd., which built the Chenab Bridge for the Indian State Railways in 1888, and H.K. Porter Company, which provided 8,000 light-duty and small steam switchers.

Other notable manufacturers include the Bengal Nagpur Railway Company (BNR), which assisted in the construction of new railway tracks and the conversion of medium gauge lines into broad gauge lines in India, and the American Locomotive Company, which provided locomotives to Tata Steel.

The gallery also features plates from Roto-Clone Air Control Installations Limited, among others.

A total of 15 such plates have been put on display, offering visitors a glimpse into the industrial journey of Tata Steel through the ages.

The inauguration of the gallery on International Archives Day highlights Tata Steel’s commitment to preserving and showcasing its rich industrial heritage.

International Archives Day: Celebrating the Importance of Records and Archives

International Archives Day, celebrated on June 9th each year, was established by the International Council of Archives (ICA) in 2007.

The day serves as an opportunity for archival community professionals worldwide to come together and educate the public about the importance of supporting archives and the profession.

The primary objectives of International Archives Day include increasing public awareness of the significance of records and archives, raising awareness among decision-makers about the benefits of records management for good governance and development, and emphasizing the need for long-term archival preservation and access.

The day also aims to showcase unique and rare documents preserved in archival institutions and enhance the global image and profile of records and archives.

By inaugurating the gallery on this occasion, Tata Steel not only celebrates its own industrial heritage but also contributes to the global celebration of the importance of archives and the preservation of historical records.
