Jharkhand govt gets Rs 140 cr excise duty on liquor in a month

Ranchi: Notwithstanding a general slump in businesses, Jharkhand government earned Rs 140 crore through excise duty collection in just one month.

Sources said the said revenue was earned from 20th May to 19th June.
Although liquor sales have gone down in the state, the government managed to fill its kitty by raising the excise duty. Last year, the government had earned a whopping Rs 1600 crore from liquor.

Excise Secretary Vinay Kumar Choubey said revenues are expected to grow further from next month.

Jharkhand government allowed liquor sale in the state to bolster its revenues which showed a decline during the lockdown.

In order to do so, it increased the special excise duty on liquor to 10 per cent and also enhanced VAT from 50 to 75 per cent. This has made liquor costlier by 25 to 30 per cent. Sales have been affected as a direct consequence, said an official.
