RANCHI – A newborn girl weighing around 1.1 kilograms was found abandoned under a tree in the Railway Colony area on Thursday morning amid rainfall. People who reached the spot after being alerted secured the infant immediately and rushed her to hospital.
A young man out for a morning walk in the Railway Colony first spotted the baby lying under the tree. Photographs from the scene showed stray dogs near the infant at the time.
The man’s timely intervention is believed to have saved the newborn’s life. She was later admitted to hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
The case falls under the jurisdiction of Chutia police station. Since the infant was found within railway colony premises, the Railway Protection Force stepped in to ensure she was taken to hospital.
It remains unclear who left the baby at the spot or under what circumstances. Investigators are also examining whether the child was deliberately placed there or whether other factors were involved.
Officials noted that leaving a newborn in the open in such conditions posed a serious risk to her life. “Every effort is being made to trace those responsible while ensuring the infant receives proper care,” a source familiar with the case said.
The incident has drawn attention to the question of what safe options exist for parents or families unable to care for a newborn who wish to hand the child over safely. There is a growing view that public ‘palna’ or safe cradle centres need wider availability and greater publicity.
