Rural Police Intercept Interstate Cannabis Consignment Worth Rs 60 Lakh

JAMSHEDPUR – Rural police in East Singhbhum district have arrested an interstate cannabis supplier near Baharagora. Officers recovered about 113 kg of ganja from his vehicle during a raid.
The seizure took place near Kaliadingha Chowk within the Baharagora police station area. Police also impounded the Tata car used to transport the drugs.
The recovered cannabis, packed in 113 packets, is estimated to be worth around Rs 60 lakh in the market. Rural Superintendent of Police Shubham Khandelwal announced the seizure at a press conference on Tuesday.
Khandelwal said police had received a tip-off about the consignment. The information indicated that a large quantity of ganja was being moved by car from Odisha to Kharagpur in West Bengal.
Acting on the tip, a police team laid a cordon near Kaliadingha Chowk in Baharagora. They intercepted the suspected vehicle at the spot.
A search of the car led to the recovery of 113 packets of cannabis. The consignment weighed close to 113 kg in total.
The arrested man has been identified as Pinkan Swain. He is a resident of the Nimapada police station area in Odisha’s Puri district.
Police seized both the drugs and the vehicle used in the smuggling attempt. Moreover, officers are now working to trace the full supply chain behind the operation.
Khandelwal said investigators are trying to establish where the consignment was picked up in Odisha. They are also probing who was meant to receive the delivery in Kharagpur.
The role of other individuals linked to the network is being examined as well, he said. Police indicated that further arrests could follow as the investigation continues.
The seizure adds to a series of trafficking cases reported in the district’s border areas in recent years, including cases probed near Lohardaga and Chaibasa. Similar interstate smuggling routes have previously been flagged near Jamshedpur as well.
Baharagora has seen a series of law-enforcement operations this year, including earlier action against local households in the area. Rural police in the wider East Singhbhum belt have stepped up anti-narcotics checks in recent months.
