Attackers Drug Woman with Tea Leaves, Flee with Jewellery

BOKARO – Two or three men posing as sellers of Ayurvedic tea leaves entered an elderly couple’s home in Chas on Monday. Within minutes, they left with the woman’s jewellery after making her unconscious.
The incident took place at a house on Nala Road in Shiv Shakti Colony, Ward No. 17. It occurred between roughly 11 am and noon.
The house belongs to 80-year-old Ram Pukar Ram, who lives with his 68-year-old wife, Hiramani Devi. The couple resides on the ground floor of the building.
During their conversation, the men offered Hiramani Devi a taste of the tea leaves. She placed the leaves in her mouth and fainted almost immediately.
The attackers then removed both her earrings and her mangalsutra. They fled the scene soon after.
The couple’s daughter was on the upper floor of the house at the time. However, she was in the bathroom bathing and did not witness the incident.
The entire episode was captured on a CCTV camera installed at the property. Moreover, a similar attempt had reportedly been made earlier on a neighbour, Ramwati Devi.
That attempt failed because her son happened to be at home. Besides that earlier incident, no other details of prior attempts have emerged so far.
Ram Pukar Ram recounted the episode afterward. “Two or three people came claiming to sell tea leaves,” he said. “My wife put it in her mouth and fainted, and they left with her jewellery.”
The incident has left residents in the neighbourhood on edge. In addition, CCTV footage reportedly shows the faces of the accused.
Chas police have begun investigating the case after being alerted. They are reviewing the CCTV footage in an effort to identify and arrest the accused.
The theft follows a pattern seen in other parts of the state, including an earlier temple donation-box theft in Jamshedpur and a separate assault case reported from Kadma.
Elsewhere in the Bokaro district, a fatal accident was reported earlier this year in the Bermo area. Similar house-theft cases have also been reported in Sakchi and near Bhuiyandih in recent years.
