JAMSHEDPUR – Incessant rainfall has thrown normal life out of gear across the city, with several localities reporting severe waterlogging and residents struggling with movement through flooded streets. Knee-deep water on many roads has disrupted traffic on multiple routes, while reports have also emerged of water entering homes in low-lying areas.
The water level in the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers has crossed the danger mark following continuous rain and the release of water from various dams upstream. Areas along the riverbanks now face a heightened flood risk, prompting the district administration to keep a close watch on the situation. Residents in several vulnerable pockets have been advised to remain alert and move to safer locations if needed.
Drain water has begun overflowing onto roads at multiple points in the city, worsening conditions further. The weather department has forecast the possibility of heavy rain continuing over the coming days and has appealed to residents not to step out of their homes unless necessary.
Disaster management and relief teams have been placed on alert so that any emergency situation can be addressed without delay, officials said. With rain showing no signs of let-up, large parts of Jamshedpur remain waterlogged as residents wait for conditions to return to normal.
The situation mirrors last month’s flooding, when Kharkai river water reached the main road in Bistupur and both rivers had crossed the danger mark amid worsening rain. Officials had earlier visited Mango to assess flood and waterlogging conditions there. The city’s drainage system had also come under scrutiny in July, when heavy rain exposed drainage failures and an earlier downpour had similarly waterlogged several areas of the city.
