JAMSHEDPUR – A youth from the Burmamines Muslim basti has died while undergoing treatment at a Kolkata hospital, triggering angry protests outside the local police station on Tuesday.
Md Aftab had suffered a serious gunshot wound and was first given emergency treatment in Jamshedpur. However, doctors reportedly found his condition critical and referred him to Kolkata for advanced care. He succumbed to his injuries there during treatment, according to family members.
News of his death spread quickly through the neighbourhood, and grief soon turned into public anger. A large number of residents from the Burmamines Muslim basti gathered and marched to the Burmamines police station, laying siege to the premises in protest.
Demonstrators demanded the swift arrest of those responsible for the shooting. They also voiced strong displeasure with the police administration, accusing it of inaction, and called for stringent action against the culprits.
Police officers present at the spot attempted to placate the crowd. They assured residents that a fair investigation was underway and that the accused would be arrested at the earliest. Additional police personnel were deployed in the area as a precaution, to prevent any untoward incident amid the tense atmosphere.
According to police, the matter is being probed seriously, with every angle of the case under scrutiny. Officers said raids were continuing in an effort to track down and arrest those involved.
The case adds to a string of shooting incidents that have rattled Jamshedpur and its surrounding areas in recent months. Elsewhere in the city, a shooting left two youths injured, while in Jugsalai, a firing incident was linked to illegal activities. In a separate case, police had earlier arrested five persons in a Mango firing case. Investigators had also made headway in another matter, with suspects nabbed in a separate firing case.
Meanwhile, the family of Aftab is in mourning, and local residents continue to press for prompt justice. Police said the investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is ongoing.
