JAMSHEDPUR – A senior railway engineer was stabbed and robbed by an unidentified man near the Parsudih loco gate on Tuesday night.
Junail Kerketta, aged 44, serves as a Senior Section Engineer with the railways. He had finished his night duty at the main yard.
Moreover, he was walking home along the route beside the tracks. An unknown man stopped him at that point.
The attacker then struck him with a knife. Kerketta suffered an injury to his head in the assault.
Besides, the man took away his mobile phone and cash. Other belongings were also snatched before he fled.
The incident took place at around 10.30 pm on Tuesday. News of the assault caused alarm across the locality.
Meanwhile, the injured official was rushed for treatment to Tata Main Hospital. He was admitted for first aid there.
He was later referred to Tata Motors Hospital. Doctors sought better treatment facilities for his head injury.
In addition, a large number of railway employees gathered at the spot. Word of the attack spread quickly among the staff.
The local police reached the site soon afterwards. Teams of the railway police and the RPF also arrived.
Moreover, investigators examined the spot and the surrounding stretch. A probe into the case was started the same night.
The attacker has not been identified so far. Police are also checking whether robbery was the only motive.
On the other hand, railway staff raised questions over security at the yard. They pointed to the stretch around it as well.
“Men returning from night duty here walk in complete darkness,” a railway employee said at the spot.
Besides, the workers said the railways must act seriously on the issue. They said night shift staff remained exposed to risk.
The employees have demanded regular police patrolling at the yard. They also sought the same at other sensitive points.
In addition, they asked for adequate deployment of security personnel after dark. Such steps, they said, would prevent similar incidents.
The stretch near Parsudih has reported violent crime earlier. A youth had been attacked in the area in a separate case.
Meanwhile, knife attacks have surfaced in other parts of the city too. Police in Jamshedpur had earlier moved against street snatching cases.
Security around the rail network here is handled jointly by several forces. A flag march in the railway area had been conducted in the past.
