RPF and GRP Team Nabs Trio on Platform No. 1, Two Phones Recovered

JAMSHEDPUR – Three young men were taken into custody at the Tatanagar railway station for allegedly snatching mobile phones from rail passengers, with two handsets recovered from them.
The arrests followed a joint night patrol by the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police. Officers detained the three on platform number one.
Moreover, the action formed part of the railways’ ongoing Operation Yatri Suraksha campaign. The drive targets mobile phone theft aboard trains.
Instructions for the patrol came from the Divisional Security Commissioner of the RPF Chakradharpur division. The Railway Superintendent of Police in Jamshedpur also issued directions.
Besides the platforms, teams checked several running trains on Wednesday night. Security staff on duty spotted unusual movement during the exercise.
Two youths were seen leaping from a moving train onto the platform. They had emerged from the general coach of train number 18615.
The train is the Howrah-Hatia Kriya Yoga Express. Both men then ran away at speed.
In addition, the RPF team scanned closed-circuit camera footage of the station premises. The suspects were identified from those recordings.
A search was launched soon afterwards. The two were later found strolling with a third companion.
The joint team cordoned off the area and seized all three. Questioning revealed their identities.
They were named as Sameer Mukhi, aged 20, and Sawan Munda, aged 17. The third accused is Shekhar Singh, also known as Paji, aged 20.
On the other hand, all three come from the same locality. They live at Sopodera under the Parsudih police station area of East Singhbhum.
A body search yielded two mobile handsets. Early inquiry indicated the phones belonged to travelling passengers.
Meanwhile, the seized devices have been formally taken on record. The trio was handed to the GRP police station at Tatanagar for further legal steps.
Railway police are now examining a wider angle. They want to know whether the men belong to an organised theft ring.
Their possible role in earlier thefts aboard trains is also under scrutiny. Similar cases of stolen goods recovery have been reported in the city before.
The operation was supervised by the Post Commander of the RPF at Tatanagar. The officer in charge of the GRP police station also oversaw it.
However, the field team itself was led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Balbir Prasad. He headed the combined squad that made the arrests.
The RPF has appealed to travellers to remain watchful. “Passengers should keep their luggage and phones within sight at all times,” an official said.
Any suspicious movement should be reported at once to the RPF or the GRP, he added. Railway officials said such alerts help in quick detection.
Tatanagar remains one of the busiest halts in the Chakradharpur division. Earlier reports have recorded theft at the station and disruptions to train services, while the Parsudih police action has featured in several past cases.
