Students Warn of Agitation if Undergraduate Seats Not Increased at Chandil College

SERAIKELA KHARSAWAN – The college committee of the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) raised its voice on Saturday demanding an increase in undergraduate seats at Singhbhum College in Chandil, the only degree college in the Ichagarh assembly constituency.
In the absence of the principal, a delegation of the organization submitted a memorandum addressed to the vice-chancellor through the officer in charge, demanding an immediate increase in seats across all subjects in proportion to student numbers.
AIDSO college committee secretary Raja Pramanik said the sanctioned seats in most undergraduate subjects have been completely filled, leaving a large number of eligible and meritorious students unable to secure admission.
He said Singhbhum College is the only degree college in the Chandil-Ichagarh assembly segment, drawing thousands of students from Chandil, Nimdih, Ichagarh, Kukru and surrounding rural and remote areas for higher education.
However, he said most students from the region come from economically weaker families, making it impossible for them to seek admission in other cities or private colleges.
Pramanik warned that if the seats are not increased in time, many eligible students could see their higher education come to a halt, affecting their future prospects.
The memorandum urged the university administration to increase the number of seats across all undergraduate subjects, keeping in mind students’ interests and the region’s academic needs, so that no eligible student is denied admission solely due to a shortage of seats.
Meanwhile, students present during the submission of the memorandum said in unison that Singhbhum College remains the primary centre of higher education in the Ichagarh assembly area.
They said the current seat limit is preventing a large number of students from securing admission, and demanded that the university administration take a positive decision without delay.
Besides submitting the memorandum, the students warned that a wider agitation would be launched in the interest of students if the seats are not increased.
