Champai Soren resigns; Hemant Soren to reclaim Jharkhand Chief Minister post.
Hemant Soren set to return as Jharkhand CM after High Court grants bail in alleged land scam case.
RANCHI – Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren resigned from his position on Wednesday, paving the way for Hemant Soren to return to power.
Champai Soren stepped down following an internal decision by the JMM coalition, which has now chosen Hemant Soren as the new leader.
Resignation and Leadership Change
Champai Soren submitted his resignation to the Governor after a party meeting.
Following the resignation, JMM’s acting president Hemant Soren claimed to form the government.
Champai Soren stated, “I was given the responsibility a few days ago, and now, with Hemant Soren’s return, our coalition has decided to make him the leader.”
Background and Legal Battle
Hemant Soren, who resigned in January following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate, is set to reclaim the Chief Minister position after five months.
Soren was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court on June 28 in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam.
The court noted that the initial evidence against Soren by the ED was insufficient.
Political Reactions and Future Prospects
The coalition, including JMM, Congress, and RJD, unanimously selected Hemant Soren as the leader during a meeting at Champai Soren’s residence.
BJP’s Nishikant Dubey criticized the leadership change, calling for Champai Soren to oppose Hemant Soren.
He remarked, “The Champai Soren era in Jharkhand has ended. There is no political future for those outside the Soren family in JMM.”
BJP state president Babulal Marandi also echoed similar sentiments, alleging the Soren family’s dominance in JMM.
Government Formation and Coalition Dynamics
Following the meeting, Champai Soren sought an appointment with Governor CP Radhakrishnan to formalize his resignation.
Currently, the Jharkhand cabinet can have 12 ministers, but there are only 10 ministers at present.
Jharkhand was formed as a separate state from Bihar on November 15, 2000.
