Public Hearing on Tata Power Tariff Hike Held

Low turnout at hearing for Tata Power’s proposed electricity rate increase in Jamshedpur

A public hearing to discuss Tata Power’s proposed electricity tariff hike witnessed low attendance due to poor publicity and venue location.

JAMSHEDPUR – A public hearing was held at Golmuri Club, Jamshedpur, by the Electricity Regulatory Commission to deliberate on Tata Power’s proposed electricity rate increase.

The location’s distance and insufficient publicity contributed to the low turnout.

Tata Power representatives detailed the need for the tariff hike, attributing it to rising operational and maintenance costs.

The hearing also covered discussions on the True-up for 2022-2023 and the Annual Performance Review for 2023-2024, with VP Singh from Tata Steel UICL making power distribution recommendations.

A few public attendees expressed strong opposition to the proposed increase in electricity tariffs.

Human rights activist Jawaharlal Sharma called for the promotion of solar energy and highlighted the disparity between the need for tariff increases and the company’s profits.

Saurabh Vishnu raised concerns about the treatment of contract workers and the environmental impact of Tata Power Plant operations, seeking clarity on CSR spending.

Senior journalist Anni Amrita pointed out the health effects on locals due to Tata Power’s activities, advocating for pricing relief and increased public engagement in the regulatory process.

Despite public concerns, the Electricity Regulatory Commission did not take a definitive stance on the tariff adjustment but noted the suggestion for solar energy promotion.
