Indian-American Ajay Banga set to become next World Bank President

Ajay Banga, an Indian-origin nominee of US President Joe Biden, is set to become the next president of the World Bank. The deadline for submitting nominations for the post ended on Wednesday, and no other candidate has been nominated to challenge Banga’s candidacy.

According to news agencies, the World Bank is expected to announce new steps regarding Banga’s appointment on Thursday. However, the official confirmation of his appointment will be made at the beginning of May.

Banga, 63, has already received sufficient support from various countries to secure the position of the World Bank President. The countries that have extended their support include Bangladesh, Britain, Colombia, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.

Banga’s election as the World Bank President is almost guaranteed, and he is expected to bring a wealth of experience to the position. He was the CEO of Mastercard from 2010 to 2021 and is known for his work in promoting financial inclusion and digital payments.

Banga’s appointment is also significant as he is the first Indian-origin person to be selected for this position. His appointment has been widely welcomed in India, and many are looking forward to his tenure as the World Bank President.
