Shekhar Plants Tricolour on Jo-Jongo Peak Above 20,000 Feet

WEST SINGHBHUM – Two visually impaired youths from West Singhbhum took part in a mountaineering expedition in Ladakh’s rugged terrain.
Shekhar and Dhiroj undertook the climb between August 25 and August 31, 2026. During the expedition, both faced harsh weather and difficult, uneven terrain.
They also had to contend with challenges related to high altitude throughout the trip. However, Dhiroj’s health deteriorated partway through the climb.
As a result, he had to remain at the base camp, located at 16,732 feet. Despite this setback, he continued to remain part of the expedition.
Meanwhile, Shekhar continued his ascent further up the mountain. He eventually reached the Jo-Jongo peak, which stands above 20,000 feet.
At the summit, Shekhar planted the Indian tricolour. His climb marked the successful completion of the expedition.
Both youths had earlier learned Braille and trained to travel independently. They had also worked on using assistive technology and developing leadership skills over several years.
In addition, both had taken part in sporting activities as part of their preparation. The expedition was organised through the efforts of Sabal, a disability rights organisation.
Sabal works for the empowerment of people with disabilities recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. The organisation focuses on training, awareness, capacity building and ensuring access to rights for persons with disabilities.
The achievement adds to a series of notable sporting and adventure feats reported from the wider Chaibasa and West Singhbhum region recently. Separately, sporting institutions in the state have also expanded opportunities for young athletes, including the recent launch of the Naval Tata hockey academy girls’ wing in Jamshedpur.
