JAMSHEDPUR – Police in Ghatshila carried out a major operation against the drug trade in East Singhbhum district, arresting two young men found in possession of brown sugar. Officers recovered 13.12 grams of the contraband, a motorcycle and two mobile phones from the accused.
A case has been registered against the duo under various sections of the NDPS Act at Ghatshila police station, and further legal proceedings are underway. Rural SP Shubham said police had received secret information on August 29 that some youths from the Musabani area were planning to bring brown sugar into the Ghatshila police station area for sale.
Taking the tip-off seriously, the senior superintendent of police and the rural superintendent of police directed the formation of a special raiding team. Under the leadership of sub-divisional police officer Vikas Kumar Laguri, the team cordoned off the area near Amainagar culvert in the Ghatshila police station limits to carry out the operation.
During the raid, officers stopped two suspicious young men and searched them. The search led to the recovery of a combined 13.12 grams of brown sugar from their possession, following which both were arrested on the spot.
The arrested accused have been identified as Jay Mahanand, 19, and Akarshit Kumar, also 19. Both are residents of the Musabani police station area.
Police also seized a black motorcycle and two mobile phones from the accused, which have been taken into custody for further investigation. The operation was carried out with the involvement of SDPO Vikas Kumar Laguri, assistant station in-charge Rajendra Kumar Munda, sub-inspector Rajnish Anand, Prem Kumar Nishad, assistant sub-inspector Alok Kumar and several personnel from the reserve guard of Ghatshila police station.
Investigators are now working to trace the source from which the seized brown sugar was procured. They are also examining the involvement of other individuals linked to the illegal trade.
Officials said the crackdown builds on a series of recent operations in the area, including an earlier arrest of three people with ganja and brown sugar and a separate seizure of 1.81 kg of cannabis and brown sugar in the same police station area. Similar operations have also been reported in Galudih, where smugglers were caught transporting cannabis from Odisha to Jamshedpur.
Authorities said the campaign against individuals connected to narcotics networks in the region will continue.
