JAMSHEDPUR – A special late-night police operation was mounted in the Bistupur area on Monday to tighten checks on street loitering and open drug use.
The exercise began after 10 pm on Monday night. Teams fanned out across the busiest crossings of the locality.
Moreover, roadside gathering points came under close watch. Officers also visited spots linked to suspicious movement.
The operation followed instructions from the Senior Superintendent of Police, East Singhbhum. Its stated purpose was firmer control over rising crime.
Meanwhile, young men found idling on the streets were questioned. Suspicious persons were screened during the same rounds.
Action was taken against people consuming intoxicants in the open. In addition, vehicles were stopped and examined during the drive.
Residents were urged to obey the law. Besides, they were asked to report suspicious activity at once.
“Late-night loitering in the locality will not be tolerated,” a police officer said. He added that antisocial elements remain under constant watch.
Police officials said such operations had been frequent in recent days. However, they described this drive as part of a wider plan.
Officers described the exercise as routine night patrol work. Similar rounds will continue at regular intervals, they said.
The stated aim is to keep the peace in Jamshedpur. On the other hand, officials want residents to feel safer after dark.
Comparable anti-crime drives have been held elsewhere in the region. Police units nearby have also pursued a drug eradication campaign.
Bistupur is among the main commercial pockets of the steel city. Its markets and eateries draw crowds till late hours.
East Singhbhum police have earlier reported the busting of a gambling den and a brown sugar seizure. Past coverage has also recorded the recovery of illegal firearms near Jubilee Park. District officers have separately held a security preparedness review and launched an online hotel guest verification facility.
