JAMSHEDPUR — Police have achieved a significant breakthrough against the illegal trade of banned medicines, arresting a youth and seizing a large cache of prohibited Corex cough syrup in the Ulidih police station area.
A secret tip-off had reached the police, indicating that a youth was on his way to Jamshedpur with a consignment of banned medicines via the Kolkata route. Acting on the intelligence, Patamda DSP Vachandev Kujur directed the formation of a special team for immediate action.
The team swiftly conducted a raid at Jawaharnagar Road Number 6. A youth identified as Zeeshan Ahmad was arrested from the spot.
During a search of the accused, police recovered 120 bottles of banned Corex cough syrup. According to police, Ahmad was planning to sell the medicines illegally in the city.
He is currently being interrogated. Meanwhile, police are actively searching for other individuals linked to this supply network.
Corex cough syrup contains codeine phosphate and has been banned or restricted in several Indian states due to widespread misuse as an intoxicant, particularly among young people. The drug menace in Jamshedpur has been a persistent concern for law enforcement agencies.
Earlier this year, police had arrested a youth for selling brown sugar in Ulidih. In another operation, excise department raids in Dhatkidih had also netted illegal substances. Police have stepped up anti-crime operations across the city in recent weeks.
