Ayushman Kumar Was Tricked into Handing Cash with Promise of UPI Transfer

JAMSHEDPUR – A young man was duped of Rs 4,000 by a stranger near an HDFC Bank ATM at Tinplate Chowk under Golmuri police station limits on Friday evening.
The victim, Ayushman Kumar, had gone to the ATM around 4 pm. A stranger approached him there. The man claimed he urgently needed Rs 4,000 in cash. He promised to return the amount via UPI transfer.
Trusting the stranger, Ayushman handed over the money. However, the man immediately turned and fled the spot. Ayushman gave chase, but the conman accelerated his motorbike and escaped.
The bike had no number plate, the victim later told police. On the other hand, the entire episode was captured on CCTV cameras installed nearby. The footage has since gone viral on social media.
Ayushman reached Golmuri police station later that evening. He filed a formal fraud complaint with the station.
Such ATM-vicinity frauds, where conmen use the pretext of UPI transfers to grab cash, have been reported across Jamshedpur before. Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the case. They are likely to examine the CCTV footage to identify the suspect.
“The accused took advantage of the victim’s trust and vanished before he could react,” said a source familiar with the matter.
In addition, the viral spread of the CCTV footage is expected to help police trace the conman. Officers have registered the case and are pursuing all available leads.
