DHANBAD – Police achieved a major breakthrough after arresting seven men and recovering a country-made pistol, a live cartridge and a stolen motorcycle in the Dhansar police station area. The operation unfolded around midnight in the Kalasangam Manaitand locality.

Six youths riding two motorcycles attempted to flee as soon as they spotted the police, but were chased down and caught. However, a search of the group led to the recovery of a country-made pistol and a live cartridge from one of the accused.

According to the police, a patrol team spotted three youths on each of two bikes at around 3.30 am on August 22. The group sped off the moment they noticed the police vehicle approaching them.

Officers, with the help of a mobile patrol unit, cornered the group near the Gandhi Nagar Shiv temple and apprehended all six. A search of the suspects revealed a locally made pistol tucked at the waist of Azad Alam.

Meanwhile, a live 3.15 mm bullet was recovered from the pocket of Mukesh Kumar. During questioning, the accused admitted that one of the two bikes had been stolen, reportedly from the Matkuria area.

Police said the group appeared to have been roaming with the intention of committing theft. Investigators later learnt the identity of Jaggu Paswan, who had allegedly supplied the weapon to the group.

Based on information provided by Azad, Paswan was also arrested in connection with the case. In total, seven accused have been arrested, and police have recovered two motorcycles, the country-made pistol and the live cartridge.

Officers said all the arrested men had prior criminal records and were known to local police in connection with earlier offences. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the illegal weapon and identify any other associates involved in the racket.

Dhanbad police have in the past cracked down on similar gangs involved in vehicle theft and illegal arms possession across the district, with recoveries of country-made weapons a recurring feature in such operations. Crackdowns on organised petty crime networks have also been reported from neighbouring districts, alongside separate cases involving narcotics smuggling and illegal weapon seizures in the region.
