JAMSHEDPUR – Panic gripped Tatanagar railway station on Monday after a young man climbed onto the roof of a stationary train and came into contact with a high-tension wire.
The man, believed to be around 30 years old, scaled the roof of the parked Tata-Danapur Express. Passengers and railway staff on the platform noticed him soon after he reached the top.
Several onlookers urged him to climb down. However, the youth reportedly ignored their pleas and continued walking along the roof of the coach.
Eyewitnesses identified him as Sagu Ram. According to bystanders, he suddenly climbed atop the train and remained there for some time before attempting to move from one end of the coach to another.
While doing so, he came in contact with an overhead high-tension electric wire running above the Tatanagar railway station tracks. The powerful electric current left him badly burned.
He subsequently lost balance and fell from the roof of the train onto the platform area. The incident triggered chaos among passengers present at the station.
Railway employees and bystanders rushed to his aid immediately after the fall. He was then taken to a hospital for emergency treatment without delay.
Hospital sources said his treatment was underway and his condition was currently stated to be stable. Meanwhile, an atmosphere of panic persisted at the station for some time following the incident.
Railway officials have repeatedly warned passengers against climbing onto the roofs of stationary trains under any circumstances. Overhead wires running along railway tracks carry extremely high and dangerous voltage.
Contact with such wires can cause severe burns or prove fatal, officials said. The railway safety authorities have appealed to commuters to follow safety regulations strictly.
Officials further urged passengers to avoid any activity that puts their lives at risk on railway premises. Similar electrocution incidents involving high-tension wires have been reported elsewhere in the region in the past.
The railway station authorities have not yet clarified the reason behind the youth’s actions. An investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident is expected to follow.
