JAMSHEDPUR – East Singhbhum police arrested a 21-year-old man near Pardih Chowk on Friday evening after recovering 38 packets of brown sugar from his possession, officials said. The action came as part of a broader crackdown on the illegal drug trade in the district.
The accused was identified as Saurabh Ohri, son of Rajesh Kumar Ohri. Police said a smartphone was also seized from him at the time of his arrest.
According to officers, a tip-off was received around 8:10 pm on August 7, 2026, indicating that brown sugar was being bought and sold in and around Pardih Chowk. Senior police officials were informed immediately, following which a special raiding team was formed under the leadership of the deputy superintendent of police, Patamda.
The team began surveillance in the Pardih Chowk area soon after. Officers spotted a suspicious young man during the operation, who attempted to flee upon noticing the police presence. The team cordoned off the area and apprehended him. During questioning, he identified himself as Saurabh Ohri.
His current address was given as KP Flat number 115 near the Circuit House, behind the Out House in Bistupur, while his permanent address was recorded as near RP Patel High School at Gaushala Chowk in the Jugsalai police station area.
A search of the accused turned up 38 packets of brown sugar along with the smartphone, police said. The seized items have been confiscated, and legal proceedings against him have been initiated.
During preliminary questioning, Ohri claimed he had obtained the brown sugar from one Pawan Yadav of Sonari. Police said Yadav’s name has previously surfaced in connection with a network linked to an earlier case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Investigators are verifying this claim and working to trace how the supply network has been operating.
Proceedings to produce the arrested man before court have begun. Police said the raiding operation will continue as they search for other suspects connected to the case. Officers are also working to trace additional individuals linked to the drug trade based on information gathered from the accused and the recovered mobile phone.
Narcotics cases have surfaced periodically across Jamshedpur in recent years, with police periodically busting supply networks operating out of residential neighbourhoods. Officials have said sustained monitoring of known trafficking routes remains a priority for the district police.
