Congress Women Leaders End Row With Saryu Roy

Mahila Congress Urges MLA to Avoid Remarks on Women Representatives

Key Points:

  • Congress women leaders call off protest plan against MLA
  • Mayor Sudha Gupta suggested closing the political dispute
  • Leaders seek respectful language towards elected women

JAMSHEDPUR – A political dispute between Mango Mayor Sudha Gupta and Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy has been closed by Congress women leaders.

The announcement was made at a press conference held in the city. Women leaders of the party addressed reporters on the matter.

Moreover, they appealed to the legislator on future conduct. They asked him to avoid objectionable remarks against any woman representative.

The row began during a sit-in outside the Mango Municipal Corporation office. The MLA had addressed the gathering there.

Besides, he had referred to the mayor in his speech. He said she spent thousands of rupees daily on her make-up.

The statement had heated the political atmosphere in the city. The women’s wing of the Congress had then prepared for an agitation.

In addition, the wing had linked the remark to the dignity of women. Preparations for a protest had been under way.

Meanwhile, the mayor herself advised against taking the matter further. The women leaders accepted the suggestion and dropped the plan.

Nalini Sinha, the district president of the Mahila Congress, spoke at the conference. Aparna Guha, a state leader of the wing, was also present.

They said the legislator held the position of a guardian for them. They said they expected respectful language from him.

“We are not asking for an apology, only for restraint in future,” Sinha said.

Moreover, the leaders said their concern extended to daughters and daughters-in-law. They said elected women representatives deserved the same regard.

Besides, they made clear that no demand for regret had been raised. Their only request was that such remarks not be repeated.

They said such statements affected the dignity of women in public life. They also said it affected the standing of women in politics.

On the other hand, the leaders said political differences had their own place. They described disagreement as part of a healthy democracy.

In addition, they said all public representatives must observe limits in language. They said this applied to matters concerning respect for women.

Saryu Roy has represented the assembly seat over several terms. He had earlier announced a one-year development plan for his constituency.

Meanwhile, he has taken up governance issues on public platforms. He had convened an anti-corruption conference in the past.

The legislator has also handled welfare matters at the local level. He had distributed pension issue letters among residents earlier.

Besides, the Mango civic body has drawn attention from other representatives. A member of Parliament had reviewed infrastructure issues in Mango earlier.

The Congress unit in Jamshedpur has taken to the streets on several issues before. Its city workers had protested over an attack on a party leader.

In addition, local organisations here have taken up related themes. Events on women’s empowerment have been held in the city.
