JAMSHEDPUR – Thieves broke into the locked residence of an India Reserve Battalion jawan in the Kailash Nagar area under Burmamines police station and decamped with jewellery and cash estimated at around Rs 50 lakh, while the family was away from home.

The jawan, identified as Nitesh Kumar Jha, had left for an outing with his family. Before leaving, he had handed over the house keys to a neighbour for safekeeping. On Sunday morning, the neighbour went to check on the house and found the main door’s lock broken open.

The neighbour immediately alerted Nitesh Jha’s father-in-law. Upon reaching the spot and inspecting the premises, the household items were found scattered across the rooms. Thieves had forced open the almirah and locker. They made off with gold and silver ornaments as well as cash.

According to family members, the total value of the stolen jewellery and cash was approximately Rs 50 lakh. Police reached the spot shortly after being informed and launched an investigation.

However, no formal FIR had been registered at the police station until the time this report was filed. Officers are currently questioning residents of the locality. Additionally, CCTV footage from cameras installed in the surrounding area is being examined to identify the culprits.

Burglaries targeting locked homes have been rising in Jamshedpur in recent months. In a similar incident, thieves had cut through the roof of a locked house in Bagbera and stolen property worth Rs 15 lakh. The latest theft at a security personnel’s residence has added to residents’ anxiety and raised fresh questions about law and order in the city.
