- No casualties reported; police yet to reach spot when report was filed
JAMSHEDPUR – An Odisha-registered Scorpio was reduced to ashes near a petrol pump on Mango Old Purulia Road after firecrackers being burst on the vehicle’s roof sparked a fire that rapidly engulfed the entire SUV, narrowly avoiding a potentially catastrophic explosion at the adjacent fuel station.
The incident took place near Jisu Bhawan on Mango Old Purulia Road. The Scorpio, bearing registration number OR 16D 8787, caught fire when sparks from firecrackers being burst on its roof ignited the vehicle. Within moments, the fire spread across the entire car.
The vehicle was completely gutted. However, the more alarming aspect was its proximity to a petrol pump. Had the fire spread to the fuel station, the consequences could have been catastrophic for the surrounding area.
Eyewitnesses at the scene acted swiftly. They used fire extinguishers available at the petrol pump and sand to douse the flames. Their timely intervention prevented the fire from reaching the petrol pump and averted a far larger disaster.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident. However, panic gripped the locality for a considerable time after the fire broke out.
Police had not reached the scene of the incident until the time this report was filed. The reckless act of bursting firecrackers on a vehicle parked near a petrol pump in Mango has raised serious concerns about public safety and the need for stricter vigilance at fuel stations.
