Woman Narrowly Escapes Kerosene Attack by In-Laws in Jamshedpur

Sitaramdera Resident Alleges Repeated Abuse, Attempted Murder by Husband’s Family

Key Points:

  • Woman alleges in-laws poured kerosene on her in bid to burn her alive
  • Prior police-mediated settlement at Sakchi Mahila Thana had failed to stop abuse
  • Police have begun probe; victim demands strict action and protection

JAMSHEDPUR – A woman from the Sitaramdera area of Jamshedpur has narrowly escaped a bid to burn her alive, allegedly by her in-laws, who are said to have poured kerosene on her early in the morning.

According to the victim, her father-in-law had been subjecting her to persistent ill-treatment.

When she complained to other members of the family, the situation worsened considerably.

Rather than receiving support, she was then allegedly tormented by the entire household.

A few days before this fresh incident, she had filed a complaint at the Sakchi Mahila Thana.

At that time, a police-mediated settlement was reached between both parties in the presence of officers.

However, she alleged that the harassment did not stop despite the agreement.

The fresh complaint describes how her in-laws beat her mercilessly on the night preceding the attempted burning.

The next morning, kerosene was allegedly poured over her body with the intent to set her on fire.

She managed to escape and fled from the house, saving her life.

On reaching Sakchi police station, she submitted a written complaint detailing the incident.

Meanwhile, the Jamshedpur police have initiated an investigation following receipt of the complaint.

Both sides are currently being questioned by the authorities.

The victim has demanded strict action against the accused in-laws.

She has also appealed to the authorities to ensure her personal safety going forward.

Domestic violence involving attempts on a woman’s life after failed police mediation has been reported in the region earlier as well.

Under the Indian Penal Code, attempt to murder and cruelty by in-laws attract serious criminal charges, including under Section 307 and the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The Sitaramdera area has witnessed multiple crime incidents in recent weeks.

Police are yet to make any arrests in this case.
