Rare Nasolabial Cyst Successfully Treated at MGM Hospital

Doctors Perform Complex Surgery on Patient After Two-Year Struggle

Key Points:

  • Woman diagnosed with rare bilateral nasolabial cyst
  • MGM Hospital doctors successfully remove the cyst through surgery
  • Condition extremely rare, with few recorded cases worldwide

JAMSHEDPUR – A woman suffering from a rare bilateral nasolabial cyst for the past two years was successfully treated at MGM Hospital on Saturday. The condition, which caused significant breathing difficulties, was diagnosed after thorough examinations by the hospital’s ENT specialists.

Rare Diagnosis and Symptoms

Doctors discovered that the cyst had developed between the patient’s gums and both nasal passages, an extremely unusual occurrence. Nasolabial cysts are rare, and bilateral cases—where the cyst appears on both sides—are even more uncommon. Globally, only a handful of such cases have been documented.

The patient had been experiencing breathing problems for two years, prompting her to seek treatment at MGM Hospital. Upon diagnosis, the doctors informed the family about the rarity and seriousness of the condition.

Successful Surgical Intervention

The surgical procedure was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Head of the ENT Department and Professor, alongside Dr. BS Hansda, Dr. Noman Alam, and Dr. Dashrath Singh Munda. The team skillfully removed the cyst, providing much-needed relief to the patient.

Dr. Rohit Kumar highlighted the significance of the case, stating, “Bilateral nasolabial cyst is an extremely rare condition with very few reported cases globally. This case offers a valuable learning opportunity for our postgraduate doctors.”

A Learning Opportunity for Research

As MGM Hospital offers postgraduate studies in ENT, the department has decided to conduct further research on the condition. Dr. Rohit Jha added, “Typically, nasolabial cysts are found on one side of the nasal cavity. However, bilateral occurrences, like in this case, are extraordinarily rare.”

The successful surgery marks a milestone for MGM Hospital, showcasing their expertise in treating complex and rare medical conditions. The hospital team is optimistic that further research will yield new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of nasolabial cysts.
