Sudden Transfer of 179 Workers from Jamshedpur Depot Sparks Concerns

JAMSHEDPUR – In a significant move, Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahato met Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Fertilizers, and Public Distribution, Prahlad Joshi, to demand the immediate revocation of the transfer of 179 workers from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) Food Storage Depot in Jamshedpur.
Abrupt Transfers Raise Concerns
The workers, including Sardars, Mandals, Head Shramiks, and Sahayak Shramiks, were transferred to Jasidih and Dhanbad on October 7, 2023. Despite sufficient work at the Jamshedpur warehouse, the operations were handed over to private contractors, sparking concerns about procedural irregularities and financial inefficiencies.
MP Mahato emphasized that the sudden transfers have caused distress to the workers and their families. “The interests of workers and procedural norms have been completely ignored,” he said, highlighting the disruption caused to children’s education and family life. Workers nearing retirement have been particularly affected, with some being compelled to consider voluntary retirement.
Financial Losses and Accountability
Mahato also pointed out the financial loss caused to the FCI by outsourcing operations to private contractors. He called for an investigation into the decision and urged accountability from those responsible.
In a detailed letter (No. 151/1/2024, dated February 8, 2024) submitted to the Union Minister, Mahato demanded the cancellation of the transfer order (Reference No. FCI/FSD/SR/IRL/2022-23/09) and reinstatement of all 179 workers to their original roles in Jamshedpur.
Union Minister Promises Action
Responding to MP Mahato’s appeal, Union Minister Prahlad Joshi assured that the matter would be taken seriously. He promised prompt and concrete action to address the grievances of the affected workers.
The meeting marks a critical step towards safeguarding workers’ rights and ensuring fair practices in the FCI operations in Jamshedpur.
