Cooperative system credited for India’s dairy sector success at XLRI event

JAMSHEDPUR – Amul’s managing director praised India’s cooperative working system as a potential gift to the world at XLRI’s Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration.

Jayen Mehta, MD of Amul and GCMMF, delivered the 11th oration on Saturday.

He emphasized the significance of the cooperative model in India’s dairy sector.

"India is now the largest milk producer globally," Mehta stated.

Moreover, he predicted India would soon produce one-third of the world’s milk.

Mehta highlighted dairy’s role as a crucial livelihood source for rural India.

Additionally, he revealed Amul’s successful milk launch in the U.S. market.

The brand is now preparing to enter the European market for the first time.

Nirmala Kurien, daughter of Dr. Verghese Kurien, also addressed the gathering.

She reaffirmed her father’s belief in life as a privilege not to be wasted.

"My father dared to dream of a milk-sufficient India," Nirmala reminisced.

Meanwhile, XLRI director Fr. S George S.J. praised Dr. Kurien’s commitment to social entrepreneurship.

He noted India’s consistent position as the largest milk producer since 1997.

Furthermore, Mehta shared impressive statistics about Amul’s current operations.

"Amul collects over 310 lakh liters of milk daily," he revealed.

The company operates 107 dairy plants across India, producing over 50 products.

With an annual turnover of ₹80,000 crores, Amul is now globally recognized.

The brand is owned by 36 lakh farmers, embodying the cooperative spirit.
