AITUC Stages Protest at Tata Power Gate Over Workers’ Issues

Workers led by Ambuj Thakur demand resolution of payment and benefits issues at Tata Power in Govindpur.

JAMSHEDPUR – The Tata Power gate in Govindpur was the site of a substantial protest by AITUC on Thursday, during which they emphasized the numerous challenges that the workers encountered.

The protest, which was spearheaded by labor leader Ambuj Thakur, was intended to address the grievances and irregularities that were impacting the workers at Tata Power.

Thakur underscored that it is regrettable to observe such irregularities in a globally recognized organization such as Tata.

"Seeing such issues in a Tata-associated company is truly unfortunate," Thakur asserted.

Concerns of workers

During the expansion work at Tata Power over the past three years, the protestors identified numerous issues that have persisted.

Workers are either unpaid or underpaid when new contractors assume responsibility for projects and subsequently abandon them.

Financial strain is imposed on laborers by certain contractors, who either fail to deduct workers’ PF/ESIC or pay low wages.

Complaints that are persistent

The protest was coordinated by AITUC in response to the ongoing complaints from workers regarding unpaid wages and other matters.

Thakur accused the management of disregarding the concerns of the workers, asserting, "Whenever we bring these issues to the management, they claim that wages are being paid.".

He questioned the origin of these issues, which compelled workers to protest for their rights.

Threats and Demands

Thakur insisted that the management should directly handle payments rather than through contractors and demanded immediate payment of all due compensation.

"If the management does not heed our demands, we will be compelled to intensify our agitation," Thakur indicated.
