Former champion emerges as sole frontrunner after decisive sixth round

Tight competition continues as event showcases Jamshedpur’s sporting legacy.

JAMSHEDPUR – The fourth day of Tata Steel’s 4th All-India FIDE Rating Chess Tournament 2024 saw significant shifts in the leaderboard, with former champion Samarth J Rao of Karnataka emerging as the sole leader.

Miss Parul Singh, Sub-divisional Magistrate of Dhalbhum, inaugurated the day’s play, congratulating participants on reaching this prestigious national event.

The sixth round’s top board witnessed a decisive clash between joint leaders Samarth Rao and Naveen Kumar of Andhra Pradesh. Rao’s aggressive Stonewall Attack proved decisive, securing victory after 46 moves.

“I managed to gain a clear edge on my opponent by the 13th move,” Rao commented on his winning strategy.

On board two, Nabhneel Das continued his impressive run, forcing a draw against the higher-rated Venkata Krishna Karthik in 38 moves.

Vaibhav Gautam secured a clinical win on board three, while Maharashtra’s Aditya defeated Jagdish of Karnataka on board four.

After six rounds, Rao leads with 5.5 points, followed closely by Karthik, Gautam, Das, and Aditya, all at 5 points.

Two final rounds remain to determine the tournament champions.

Participants also visited Tata Steel’s sports facilities, including the Football Academy, Archery Academy, and High Performance Centre, showcasing the company’s commitment to athletics.

The tournament continues to highlight Jamshedpur’s significance in India’s chess and broader sporting landscape.
