Sangharsh Shanti Samiti Bharat condemns the launch of Kendall Jenner’s 818 Tequila in India, citing potential harm to the youth.
818 Tequila, Kendall Jenner’s premium brand, launches in India amidst strong opposition from local organization concerned about youth impact.
JAMSHEDPUR – Sangharsh Shanti Samiti Bharat has voiced strong opposition to the official launch of 818 Tequila, a premium tequila brand owned by model Kendall Jenner, in India.
The organization expressed concerns that the introduction of this alcoholic beverage could negatively impact the country’s youth.
In a statement, Chandra Pathak of Sangharsh Shanti Samiti Bharat, highlighted that the launch of 818 Tequila would likely harm young people, particularly those attending college and from middle-class families.
The group fears that increased alcohol consumption could jeopardize their future prospects and family responsibilities.
Introducing an alcoholic product like 818 Tequila in India poses a significant risk to the youth,” stated a representative from Sangharsh Shanti Samiti Bharat.
“They are at a critical stage in their lives, focusing on education and building their futures. The influence of a popular model promoting alcohol consumption is worrisome.”
Launch Details and Brand Background
818 Tequila, launched in 2021 by Kendall Jenner, is produced in Jalisco, Mexico, using Weber blue agave.
The brand’s name is derived from the area code of Calabasas, California, where Jenner spent much of her childhood.
In India, the tequila is distributed exclusively by Berry Beverages and imported by Berry Beverages and Zoup Beverages.
The brand has also been noted for its contributions to environmental causes, with Jenner and her team engaging in partnerships through initiatives like 1% for the Planet.
Cultural and Social Concerns
Sangharsh Shanti Samiti Bharat emphasized that India’s cultural context differs significantly from other markets where 818 Tequila might be more accepted.
Many Indian states have strict regulations on the sale of alcohol, reflecting societal values that prioritize health and well-being.
The organization’s representative added, “In a country where many states have banned the sale of alcoholic substances, introducing a product like 818 Tequila is not just inappropriate but harmful. We urge celebrities to promote healthier, more beneficial products for the youth.”
The group has called for a reconsideration of the product launch, urging authorities and distributors to be mindful of the potential social impact.
