Severe Storm Wreaks Havoc in Bagbera and Jugsalai, Leaving Residents Distressed

District Council Member Dr. Kavita Parmar Responds to Crisis, Advocates for Swift Action

The aftermath of a severe storm and heavy rainfall on Sunday evening has left the residents of Bagbera and Jugsalai areas in a state of distress, as inundated homes and damaged infrastructure paint a grim picture of the destruction caused by the natural calamity.

JAMSHEDPUR – The lower settlements of Bagbera, including Naya Basti, Ganesh Nagar, Baroda Ghat, Babakuti, Sidho-Kanhu Basti, Kitadih and Golgappa Basti, bore the brunt of the storm’s fury as approximately 100 houses were inundated by surging drain water following the heavy downpour.

Fearing further inundation, residents were forced to evacuate their homes, seeking refuge in safer locations with their belongings.

The perennial flooding issue in Bagbera has been exacerbated by encroachment near River View Society, which has narrowed the width of the drain, diverting rainwater into settlements instead of allowing it to flow into the river.

Despite repeated appeals from locals for action against the encroachment, the Circle Officer’s office has been slow to address the matter, leaving residents vulnerable to flooding during the rainy season.

District Council Member Takes Swift Action

In response to the crisis, District Council member Dr. Kavita Parmar wasted no time in visiting Naya Basti to assess the extent of the damage firsthand.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Parmar advocated for the immediate cleaning of sluice gates, which play a crucial role in mitigating the risk of flooding.

Furthermore, she coordinated with the Electricity Department to address the damage caused by fallen trees and electricity poles, ensuring that repairs were carried out swiftly to restore power and safety to the affected households.

"The prompt response and proactive measures taken by Dr. Kavita Parmar have provided a glimmer of hope to the residents of Bagbera during this challenging time," said a local resident, expressing gratitude for the council member’s efforts.

Jugsalai Under Bridge Transformed into Temporary Pond

The heavy rainfall also had a severe impact on the Jugsalai area, particularly the under bridge near Tata Pigment Gate, which was transformed into a temporary pond due to the deluge.

Buses, tempos, two-wheelers, and pedestrians found themselves stranded, struggling to navigate through the floodwaters, leading to significant traffic congestion in the area.

The under bridge, which serves as a vital link connecting Tatanagar station to Bistupur, Sonari, Sakchi, and Adityapur, has been plagued by perennial flooding issues, highlighting the urgent need for a permanent solution to alleviate the woes of commuters.

"The Jugsalai under bridge has become a nightmare for commuters every monsoon," lamented a frustrated daily commuter. "It is high time that the authorities take concrete steps to address this recurring problem and provide a reliable and safe passage for the public."

As the residents of Bagbera and Jugsalai grapple with the aftermath of the severe storm, the swift action taken by District Council member Dr. Kavita Parmar has provided a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation.

However, the recurring nature of these flooding incidents underscores the need for long-term solutions and proactive measures to mitigate the impact of such natural calamities on the lives and livelihoods of the people in these areas.
