JAMSHEDPUR – A large tricolour procession moved through the city on Sunday, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Jamshedpur Metropolitan unit ahead of Independence Day.
The Sakchi rally, called the Tiranga Yatra, began at Netaji Subhash Maidan, also known locally as Aam Bagan. Participants carried national flags and raised patriotic slogans through the march.
Party workers, supporters, social activists and residents joined the procession in large numbers. Marchers paid tribute to freedom fighters and their sacrifices during the walk.
The route stretched from the Sakchi ground to the roundabout outside the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee office. Tricolours were visible along the entire stretch of the march.
Organisers said the event aimed to strengthen feelings of national unity among residents. The yatra also sought to honour the contributions of independence movement figures.
MP Bidyut Baran Mahato addressed the gathering, saying the event formed part of a nationwide series of patriotic programmes called for by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the march was intended to remind citizens of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters and to call for strengthened national unity.
However, the rally also featured several senior BJP figures. Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das and the party’s former state president, Dr. Dineshanand Goswami, took part in the march.
Jamshedpur East MLA Purnima Sahu was also present at the event. Meanwhile, a large number of party workers and local residents registered their participation alongside the leaders.
Patriotic songs and slogans kept the atmosphere energetic throughout the march. Organisers described the tricolour as more than a national flag, calling it a symbol of the country’s freedom, pride, unity and the sentiments of millions of Indians.
Besides commemorating the freedom struggle, the event was framed as an effort to introduce younger generations to the sacrifices of independence fighters. Such Jamshedpur gatherings have become a regular feature of the city’s pre-Independence Day calendar in recent years.
The Sunday march comes days ahead of similar programmes expected across the district. City flag display appeals and tricolour campaigns have picked up pace in the run-up to August 15 this year, echoing similar events held in previous years, including a 2023 patriotism tribute event and a citywide school celebration around the same date. BJP’s Jamshedpur unit has separately held commemorative programmes such as its tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee earlier this year.
